Emily Chen

I used charcoal for this self portrait. Since I was only using black, I wanted to make sure that there were sharp contrasts throughout the painting. Some areas I pressed on the charcoal heavily while in other areas I used white charcoal to bring out the contrast. I wanted to keep this painting very simple. Hence the background that adds something to the painting but does not take attention away from viewers.
